What is Home Performance?

Comfenergy is your local home performance contractor, but what exactly is home performance?

The definition of home performance is a philosophy and a science based on the premise that homes should be safe, healthy, comfortable, durable, and efficient. It describes how all aspects of a home work together as one comprehensive system. Makes sense right? Yet typically, more thought often goes into selecting flooring or paint color than what is needed to make the house comfortable, healthy, sturdy, and energy efficient.

We are your building science experts and can help you understand the many factors that affect how a building performs. It is important to understand how elements in a home are all connected. Our highly trained technicians use diagnostic equipment to access exactly what is happening in your home, how things are interacting, and what needs to be done to fix specific issues.

Your house is a system!

The Comfort Triangle

The image above is what we call "The Comfort Triangle". Imagine that your house is just a big box that you live in. Your HVAC system, as long as it's working properly, makes hot and cold air, measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute), which are about the size of a basketball. How do these basketballs of air get to other rooms and travel throughout your house? Duct work! The duct work gets all of those basketballs of air where they need to go. Finally, the building envelope, or everything that separates the inside of the house from the outside, keeps that air that you just paid to condition inside your home.

As home performance contractors, we look at all of these factors when diagnosing a problem. If your HVAC isn't working you should call your local HVAC contractor but if your air conditioning and heat are working properly, and you still have cold rooms, cold floors, drafty areas, or high energy bills, then we are your guys! We find out exactly where the breakdown in your duct work or building envelope is happening by using tools like a blower door test, thermal cameras, and smoke puffers. These tools make the invisible forces in your home visible, allowing you to see the root causes of your issues. On top of your heat and air flow problems, we also address another big issue, probably the biggest issue- Moisture in your house!! Moisture can cause some major problems, such as mold, health difficulties, and structural damage, lessening the durability of your home.

Think of us as house doctors. Your home and the conditions in it are unique and we customize all of our solutions to your home's particular needs. We will help you to understand your home's energy use and identify home improvements that will improve your comfort, health, and lower your utility bills.

The very best part is that we do an evaluation on your house, FOR FREE!! We want to educate and show you what is going on in your home. Knowledge is power! You have nothing to lose. If you would like a home comfort evaluation done in your own home, we will gladly get you set up for an appointment. Just give us a call.
