Top Floor Too Hot in Lorton, VA
Challenge
This Lorton, VA homeowner was looking for the best way to cool down their top floor. In the summer, this home's upper level got so hot the family would not go upstairs. They had to camp out in the first floor family room during the hot summer nights! When a home is not properly insulated, air leaks can cause outside air to enter the home, causing uneven and uncomfortable conditions for the residents. Since the top floor was the issue, we suspected the attic was the issue.
Solution
We went to the attic to evaluate the issue. There was old and dirty fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass does not insulate nearly as well as blown-in cellulose insulation. The R-value was low, and the dirty insulation was filtering dirty air into the home. We removed the fiberglass and noticed the exhaust fans were passing through the attic. The hot and humid are traveling through these fans creates a great risk for mold - so we need to better insulate to prevent this from happening! We air sealed all of the possible leaks before adding the new insulation. We installed the TruSoft R-60 Cellulose insulation. Now the family is comfortable using their top floor and no longer has to sleep downstairs!
