Insulation Install in Annandale, VA

Challenge

This Annandale, VA home had a beautiful sun room addition off the back of the house. However, the homeowner noticed it was always cold in the winter and hot in the summer. After an evaluation, Comfenergy found the addition was built over a deck that used to be there. The areas below were not insulated, and the skylights added heat from solar gain in the summer!

Solution

Comfenergy put together a solution that would make the room more usable and comfortable all year round. The crawl space was so low to the ground that we were only able to spray foam on the under side of the floors. Not ideal, but it still worked great! We added skylight inserts that deflected the suns UV rays and solar gain back out of the room, yet are still clear and add light to the room. We also packed cellulose insulation into the vaulted ceilings to prevent drafts from traveling around the room.

The crawl space under the sun room was actually the ground under an old deck. Not a lot of space to work.

This is a view from under the deck literally looking under the main house! Hot/cold air would travel beneath the sun room and enter the home.

Foam boards were used to block off this air from traveling into the main house from beneath the sun room.

Foam spray was used to make an air tight seal and insulate the rim joist area.

Closed cell foam spray was installed under the flooring of the sun room to keep cold air away from it during the winter! Now this sun room is usable all year round!
