This Herndon, VA homeowner was looking to make the top floor of their home more comfortable and less drafty, yet not lose any attic storage area. Comfenergy was able to offer a solution for all of these requests in one wonderful package!
Solution
Comfenergy first removed the existing attic plywood decking to reveal dirty, blown fiberglass and a ton of air leakage from the house. The dirty fiberglass insulation was removed to easily see the air leakage and seal them with one part foam and foam boards. A new attic storage deck was built with 4" thick SilverGlo foam boards and new OSB plywood. Plywood dams were installed to keep the newly blown TruSoft cellulose insulation off of the attic storage deck. The attic is now air sealed and they still have the storage space they needed. Comfenergy does it again!!!
This is the attic before. The attic storage deck is nice but was hiding poor insulation and air leakage leading to overly cold/hot temperatures on the top floor of the home.
After the attic storage deck was removed, there was visible dirty fiberglass indicating air leakage.
The fiberglass was vacuumed out and disposed of properly.
Next, the entire attic was air sealed using one part foam spray to keep the heated and cooled air in the house.
Recessed lights were air sealed using rock wool and one part foam.
Even the bath fans were air sealed to prevent leakage!
4" SilverGlo foam boards were installed as the beginning of the new attic storage deck.
Another shot of the SilverGlo foam boards.
New OSB plywood is installed over the foam boards to solidify the attic storage deck.
The completed decking looks like the old but is far more air tight and better insulated.
