This Marshall, VA homeowner contacted Comfenergy to help solve an issue of the home being too drafty. They also complained that the top floor was hot in the summer, they dusted too often, and their bills seemed to be higher than the neighbors.
Solution
Comfenergy performed a comfort and energy evaluation of the home to find many issues in the attic causing all of the issues listed. A comprehensive solution was delivered to solve all of the issues at hand. The following pictures show many of the solutions.
Project Summary
Evaluator: Mike Estrada
This Marshall, VA homeowner had multiple issues they were trying to solve. From lowering their utility bills, and dusting too often, to lessening drafts, and making the top floor cooler in the summer.
A new zippered attic tent was installed to stop air leakage around the attic access, yet still allow for easy access.
Here is a "before" shot of the poor insulation and the HVAC ducts with poor insulation and leakage.
The existing attic insulation was only a few inches deep. This does not provide a good thermal barrier between the attic and the conditioned floor below.
Here is an "after" shot in the same location. Lots of TruSoft cellulose insulation to keep the top floor cool in the summer.
Proper air sealing was a must for this home to keep heated and cooled air in the house and not allow it to escape.
We even found a supply duct to a bathroom missing. We installed a new insulated flexible duct line and sealed around the connection.
Here is a Comfenergy production crew member spraying the HVAC ducts to seal them and insulate them properly, thus providing proper air flow at the correct temperatures.
The final product. We solved all 4 issues with one comprehensive solution. The lesson to be learned is that blowing insulation into the attic alone will not solve all of your problems!!!
