This Leesburg, VA homeowner was having issues keeping the top floor cool in the summer. They were recommended to Comfenergy by their HVAC contractor who was out of solutions.
Solution
After a full evaluation Comfenergy found numerous causes to the top floor being too hot in the summer months. Fiberglass was used allowing air to pass through it. HVAC ducting wasn't insulated well to lessen heat transfer. There was also a tremendous amount of air leakage from the home into the attic.
Comfenergy removed the old insulation, air sealed, sprayed HVAC supply boots with closed cell spray foam, replace torn HVAC insulated flex ducts, and insulated properly.
Project Summary
Evaluator: Scott Beers
This Leesburg, VA homeowner was having trouble keeping their top floor cool in the summer. So, they called Comfenergy to solve the problem!
The existing fiberglass insulation was allowing air to travel through and around it, thus radiating heat through the drywall behind it, and making the top floor hot.
Closed cell spray foam insulation was used to air seal and properly insulate this vertical wall.
The HVAC register "boots" were encapsulated with spray foam to keep them from sweating when the cold metal would hit the hot 130 degree attic air.
Comfenergy installed plywood "dams" around the attic hatch to keep the new insulation from falling whenever opened.
New insulation depth sticks were installed to ensure the proper depth for the homeowner.
Here is the finished product. The top floor is now cool and comfortable for the homeowner.
