Do you have vents in your home that blow little to no air?

Many homeowners experience rooms in their homes that are hotter than others in summer, and colder than others in winter.  One cause of this issues could be that the HVAC supply vents delivering air into these rooms barely blow any air due to leakage.  If the heated and cooled air doesn’t get to that room, then this could be a reason for that room being hotter/colder than others.  Imagine blowing through a straw to blow air onto your hand.  If I were to make holes up and down that straw with a thumbtack, then you will feel less air on your hand. It’s that simple.

Your HVAC ducting system can be tested for leakage or disconnects by a home performance contractor.  It can be done by using a “duct blast” test or an “air velocity meter”.  These tests will show the homeowner whether or not leakage exists.  If leakage exists, then the holes need to be patched to create proper air flow. This can be done using several methods such as mastic on the holes, encapsulating the ducting system with closed cell foam spray, or even Aeroseal.

The method used to repair duct leakage depends upon many factors. The following questions need to be answered. Is the ducting accessible?  Do the ducts need to be insulated? Are the ducts inside or outside the “building envelope”? Believe it or not, there is a process to seal ducting that’s hidden behind walls without having to make any drywall damage at all if this is the case.  All these questions can be answered by your local Home Performance Contractor.
