Photo Album: Treating Attic Mold & Sweating Ducts

A home inspector told homeowners in Culpeper, VA that their attic insulation needed to be updated and that they previously had a rodent issue. They called Comfenergy to come out and give them a free evaluation. Our sales professional, Jason, went out to assess the home. He found the signs of rodents in the old insulation but he also found quite a bit of mold in areas containing duct work. Luckily this mold was treated and prevented from coming back before anyone in the home got sick or developed allergies from it. The Comfenergy Crew removed and disposed of the yucky old insulation, cleaned up the mold, and air sealed and properly insulated the attic. We also insulated the duct work that was causing condensation and mold issues with spray foam. These homeowners not only got their previous rodent issue addressed, but they also resolved a mold problem that they didn't even know about.

Air leaks are sealed.

Finding air leaks and sealing them will help these homeowners stay comfortable and save money. We sealed all of the accessible penetrations and top plates with expanding polyurethane foam.

New soffit baffles installed.

New soffit baffles were installed wherever they were needed and more air sealing was done.

Chimney is prepared for insulation.

The chimney chase is sealed with metal flashing, fire caulk, and wrapped with a RockWool sleeve.

Damming is installed.

Damming is installed in the attic to keep the cellulose insulation in place.

Moldy drywall removed and duct work insulated.

A section of moldy drywall in the garage had to be removed in order to access the duct behind it. The duct work is insulated with an inch of closed cell spray foam and the wall is framed out.
