A cantilevered floor sticks out past the wall below it. This building detail allows air to leak in, creating cold floors above and cold ceilings below. This house in Reston, VA had a cantilever that was not insulated. The soffit boards were taken down and a SilverGlo foam block was installed to block the bay. Polyurethane foam was then sprayed over the block and on the bottom of the floor deck to stop all airflow and insulation. The soffit board was reinstalled and sealed with caulk or expanding foam. The newly insulated cantilever increased comfort, made the floors warmer, and lowered utility bills for this homeowner.
