Photo Album: Springfield VA attic air seal and insulate.

This Springfield VA home had a top floor that was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. The homeowners called us to have a free home efficiency inspection done and our sales pro Eric was able to identify a solution to their problems. Eric determined that the conditioned air being heated or cooled by the HVAC system was being allowed to escape from the living spaces of the home and was leaking into the attic. The lack of air seal in the attic let that hot and cold air leave the home, causing the HVAC system to run more than it should have to, creating more conditioned air. The attic had been partially fit with a radiant barrier but it was failing and the the existing insulation in the attic had thin spots where it lacked coverage and was very dirty due to the free flow of air in and out of the attic. Our production team removed all of the existing insulation, spray foam insulated the walls of a sunlight fixture running from inside of the home, to the roof, air sealed up all of the small cracks and air leaks with ZypFoam and then blew in TruSoft cellulose insulation. The end result will be a reduced cost to heat/cool the home and more comfort in the living spaces of the home.

Dirty Old Insulation

This insulation had been working like an air filter as dirty air was moving in and out of the living space below the attic. The color in the once pink insulation shows how much dirt and poor quality air can be moving through a home.

ZypFoam air sealing

Once the old insulation was removed, the small cracks and leaks where air had been able to escape into the attic were sealed up with ZypFoam.

Failing radiant barier

This was material was intended to be a radiant barrier, reducing the impact of heat from outside of the attic making its way in. But the original installers did not properly secure it so it was falling down and serving no purpose.

After removing the old insulation, our production team used ZypFoam to air seal the spaces where air had been able to move from one area of the home into the attic. This includes can light fixtures covering the lighting mounted in the ceiling.
