Photo Album: Springfield VA attic insulation and radiant barrier
This Springfield VA home had an attic that was often too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Due to the swings in temperature from season to season it made it difficult to use any of the attic space for storge. The attic had allowed for open air flow in and out which lead to conditioned air from the living areas of the home escaping into the attic, causing the HVAC system to run more than needed and increasing the energy bills for the homeowner. Our Sales Professional Carl went out to perform a free home performance inspection and identified solutions to help improve the comfort and energy efficiency of the home.
While the attic was insulated, it did not have enough insulation to fully insulate the entire attic effectively. Before adding more blown insulation our production team went across the attic and used ZypFoam to air seal the cracks and areas that were allowing air to flow in and out. They installed several can light covers and sealed them as well. A radiant barrier was applied to the roof of the attic and additional spray foam was used to insulate a sky light tunnel.
This all worked to seal up the attic, protect it from allowing outside temperatures to impact the temperature inside and reduced the likelihood of the HVAC system running as much as it was. Increased comfort and reduced energy costs.
Radiant Barrier

Radiant Barrier
This along with the insulation upgrade helped to transform the look and feel of this attic
Before Radiant Barrier
Spotty, thin insulation and no radiant barrier

Mixed and thin insulation before the project was completed
Attic after
TruSoft cellulose insulation blown in to finish the project after the air sealing and radiant barrier was completed

Can Light Cover
This can light cover was sealed with ZypFoam. It will prevent conditioned air from the room below from leaking into the attic.
