Photo Album: Stafford VA Attic Air Sealing, Insulation and Hatch Cover
This home in Stafford VA had uneven temperatures from one level to the other. The homeowners called us to see if we could help find a solution. Our Home Performance Sales Pro Jason was able to discover the source of the problem. Jason determined that the home was leaking air. The conditioned air created by the HVAC system was not staying in the rooms it was intended to heat or cool and was therefore causing the HVAC system to run more than it should, leading to high energy bills. Our Production Crew removed the old insulation in the attic which was dirty from filtering duct and allergens from the air in the home that was escaping into the attic. The attic was then air sealed with Zyp foam to close off all of the places where air had been able to move in and out of the attic. Can light covers were installed to seal in the light fixtures and keep the heat created by the bulbs from moving into the attic. Tru Soft cellulose insulation was then blown in to cover the attic floor and properly hold the temperature of the home as needed. The newly installed attic hatch tent cover was then zippered closed, creating the best seal possible to keep air from moving into the attic.
Attic Before
This old insulation and floor planking would be removed in order to air seal the attic floor.
Attic Before
The dark spots in the once all pink insulation show where it acted as a filter for the uncontrolled air that had been moving through the space. Dust and allergens turn the insulation darker when collected.
Air Sealing
Zyp Foam air sealing keeps unwanted airflow from happening.
Air Sealing
This can light cover is sealed with Zyp Foam to keep air from moving freely. The other seams of the drywall and frame gaps are also sealed with Zyp Foam.
Attic After
Tru Soft cellulose insulation fills the attic now creating the proper R Value of coverage. The Attic Tent hatch cover can be zipped closed when access to the attic is not needed.
