This Manassas Park VA homeowner called us for one specific reason. Their daughters room was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter and they wanted to see if that could be improved. Our Home Performance Sales Pro Eric visited with the homeowners and did a full home inspection to see what type of project he could design to help. Eric focused on the attic which he found was insufficiently insulated and not air sealed. The uncontrolled air flow in the home was allowing conditioned air, heated or cooled by the HVAC system, to escape the rooms it was intended to heat or cool. The HVAC ducts were also at risk inside of the attic not having been insulated or protected. Eric suggested removal of the old insulation, air sealing with Zyp Foam, spray foam insulating several exchange boxes for the HVAC ducts and filling the attic with Tru Soft blown in cellulose insulation. This will all result in not only a more comfortable room for their daughter, but cleaner air and lower energy bills for the home.

HVAC Duct Insulation Needed

This HVAC duct exchange box was leaking conditioned air and lacked insulation. If the attic was hot, the box would be hot. If the attic was cold, the box was cold.

Dirty Insulation

Dirty Insulation is a clear sign of uncontrolled air flow in and out of the attic. Dusty air is filtered by the insulation and turns it darker.

Attic Air Sealing and Spray Foam Insulation

with removal of the old insulation, the attic is now prepared to be air sealed. Spray Foam was used to insulate the HVAC duct exchange box.

Attic insulation is only as good as the air sealing that is done before it is installed. Zyp Foam is used here to seal in seams, gaps and cracks in the attic floor.
