Photo Album: Oakton Virginia Energy Bill Cost Reduction
This homeowner in Oakton Virginia wanted to reduce the cost to heat and cool their home. Our Certified Home Performance Sales Pro Stephen went to do a free home performance inspection and was able to identify several solutions to help get the lower energy costs and home comfort improvements.
Removal of the existing insulation was done first in order to expose the attic floor for air sealing purposes. This would help to keep conditioned air in the rooms below from leaking into the attic.
A kitchen fan vent was extended through the roof to better exhaust the air being pushed throug it out of the home.
TiteShell can light covers were installed over top of some recessed lighting and then air sealed with ZypFoam.
Some of the existing HVAC duct system was replaced with newer, already insulated ducts.
Polyurethane Spray Foam insulation was used to encapsulate the duct system throughout the attic in addition to the HVACX duct mixing boxes and other components of the duct work.
Tru Soft cellulose insulation was then blown in to fill up the attic and was used to dense pack the area below the attic decking.
Finally a zippered attic hatch cover was installed to eliminate air flow at the open and access point to the attic.
Old Insulation Removal
The old insulation in this attic was ready to be removed. It had thin patches providing minimal performance and showed evidence of rodents.
Vent Improvement Needed
This vent was just blowing the exhausted air into the attic and not outside of the building/structure.
Air Sealing
Air sealing all of the cracks and gaps in the attic surface will help to prevent uncontrolled air flow from the rooms below. Zyp Foam is used in this process.
Venting
This vent tube is now set up to exhaust the unwanted air out of the home.
Can Light Covers
This TiteShell cover is used to eliminate air flow around the recessed lighting in the ceiling. Air Sealing the cover keeps the conditioned air in the rooms below from leaking into the attic.
Spray Foam Insulation
We encapsulated this HVAC duct with spray foam. This will protect the air traveling inside of the ducts and help keep the temperatures in the home more even.
Cellulose Insulation
After air sealing and installing the light covers, we blew in Tru Soft cellulose insulation to cover the attic surface. This insulation is treated to help prevent rodents.
