Attic Super Deck-Dumfries, VA

Challenge

This Dumfries, VA homeowner wanted to make their home more efficient, and was looking to find the best way to do so. Comfenergy performed a full evaluation of the home from windows, walls, doors, floors, HVAC, duct work and more. A blower door air leakage test, thermal imagery, air flow test, humidity testing and more were performed.

The findings showed that the worst waste of energy was the leakage of heated and cooled air through the attic!

Solution

Comfenergy put together a solution that included a "Super Attic Deck" system. This decking is composed of 4" thick foam boards that are screwed to the floor joists in the attic. Then, a layer of 1/2" plywood is installed on top of that to give it better strength and rigidity. The most important part of the super deck is that it's air-tight. Laying this on the floor of the attic keeps the heated and cooled air that you pay for from leaving the home.

This product is called a David Lewis attic hatch cover. Lightweight, 4" foam board set in place in a track on the decking keeps heated and cooled air from leaving the house, yet is easy to move.
