Comfenergy was contacted to add more insulation to this attic in Sterling, VA, but still have space for storage.
Solution
We air sealed the attic floor with one part foam spray, then installed attic decking on the floor with plywood. We created plywood "dams" to keep the future cellulose insulation in place and off of the attic floor decking. Finally, we created an attic hatch cover that was made of 4" thick SilverGlo foam boards, and blew in TruSoft cellulose insulation throughout.
Project Summary
Evaluator: Scott Beers
This Sterling, VA attic had almost no insulation. The customer wanted more insulation, but still have space in the attic for storage.
We used SilverGlo 4" thick foam boards to section off a portion of the attic.
We installed attic flooring for storage and to walk on using plywood. Notice the plywood "dams" we installed around the perimeter of the storage deck to hold insulation in place.
4" thick SilverGlo foam boards were used to make an insulated attic hatch.
This attic hatch is practically air tight and provides almost R20 insulation value.
