This Leesburg, VA homeowner had recently moved in during summer months. The home inspector noted that the attic insulation wasn't "up to code".
We inspected it and found many issues that we needed to bring up to par. The attic only had R13 batts, and needed to be brought up to R38 per code. It also had 7 recessed lights that were touching insulation (this is a fire hazard!) and they were leaking heat from the home into the attic. There were many other leaks around the attic that needed to be air sealed as well. The bathroom exhaust fans were vented into the attic and not to the exterior of the home. The attic hatch was leaking badly too.
Solution
Comfenergy came in with solutions to all of these isssues AND was still able to leave the storage deck in place. Check out the series of pictures for a more in depth description of the solutions.
This Leesburg, VA home was in need of many attic upgrades for safety, comfort, and energy efficiency.
Our SilverGlo Foam blocks being installed at the sides of the storage deck to stop air flow/heat loss.
Performing air sealing throughout the attic is not a fun job, but we are always up for the task! We covered the recess lights with rock wool fire-resistant covers and sealed air tight.
Batt insulation allows air to flow between the batts, and creates a drafty home.
The brick/block chimney was wrapped with rock wool fire-resistant insulation before installing TruSoft blown cellulose.
The brick/block chimney after being wrapped with rock wool and then blown TruSoft cellulose installed.
Check out the depth of the TruSoft cellulose insulation. 14" of depth when finished!!
Check out the plywood "dams" we installed around the storage deck to keep insulation separated from your valuable items.
Storage deck still usable after we finished.
Storage deck with air tight 4" thick SilverGlo foam boards.
Close up of the attic hatch cover. No cold or hot air is getting through this thing!!!
