A New England Style Roof
This photo just shows you what the exterior of this lovely home is like to give you an idea of what the Cape Cod style roof is like. It is a little tough to see here, but essentially it a roof with a pretty steep pitch (roughly a 12 inch increase in height with every 12 inches in depth). This pitch creates kneewalls which are like the small crawl spaces created when you wall up the attic so that you have flat walls around all 4 sides. In this case you cannot see where the floor meets the roof, but it is important to have proper insulation back there.
Trends From the 70s That Need to Die
A little piece of every decade sticks with us longer than maybe necessary, and in the case of many homes across America, this is fiberglass insulation from the 70s. There are many once hip trends like colored paisley counter tops or roller disco, but all great things must come to an end, and so must the time of the fiberglass insulation. It is a terribly inefficient method of thermal insulation and it is time to get upgraded with blow-in cellulose insulation.
Breaking Down Barriers
Sometimes it is so hard to break out of the ways of the past, we have to literally take down walls. Here you can see one of our crew members really getting in there to get rid of all of the fiberglass insulation we saw peaking out in the last photo.
All Moved Out!
Here you can see the fiberglass insulation is officially moved out of the knee walls and we are ready to get a move on with the next step, sprayfoam!
Sprayfoam!
Voila! The kneewalls are insulated! In some cases for kneewalls we use either blow-in insulation or a dense pack of the blow-in insulation. Here the crew switched it up and went with the sprayfoam! Every home is different and comes with its own unique qualities, making each home suited to a different combination of solutions.
Sealing Up!
Now that we have removed the old insulation and installed to new stuff, it is time to put the walls back together, clean up, and look towards the next step - insulating the end walls.
Prepped Walls
What we are looking at here is an end wall of this attic that is ready to have Basement-2-Beautiful (B2B) panels installed. B2B panels are a moisture resistant insulation with rigid foam walls that are easy to install and will keep your upper levels the right temperature and humidity. Over the next couple pictures you will see this wall transform.
B2B Part 1
Here we see the first few panels installed!
Almost There...
Just a few more!
And We're Done!
And that's a wrap! We now have a fully insulated Cape Cod styled attic and are ready to clean up and go home.
