Air Seal and Insulate Attic - Lignum, VA

Challenge

This Lignum, VA homeowner was looking to make their home warmer, less drafty, and more energy efficient this winter. A full evaluation by Comfenergy showed a tremendous amount of air leakage throughout the floor of the attic.

Solution

Comfenergy removed the existing, nasty insulation from the attic. A complete air sealing was performed so that the heated air from the home stayed in the home longer. Can lights were sealed, and the skylights were sprayed foamed using a closed cell spray foam. New soffit air baffles were installed to ensure proper ventilation of the attic. Last but not least, new R60 Tru Soft cellulose was installed for a great thermal barrier in the attic.

Now the house is warmer, less drafty, and mush more efficient!!! Another job well done by the Comfenergy team!!

Project Summary

The existing attic insulation was removed and disposed of. New soffit air baffles were installed.

Retention dams were installed around the attic hatch to keep the new R60 TruSoft cellulose in place when opening and closing the hatch.

The floor of the attic was air sealed, including the can lights. The skylight tunnels were sprayed with a closed cell spray foam.

Here is the final product! Warm, less drafty, and much more efficient for heating and cooling.
