Challenge

This home in Herndon, VA was looking to make the master bedroom more comfortable and have less drafts. The house is about 20 years old and needed some TLC upgrades in the attic.

Solution

Comfenergy air sealed the entire attic which includes using spray foam on top wall plates, around the HVAC vents, bathroom exhaust fans, and any other means for air to travel to/from the attic and the living spaces below. We installed soffit air baffles to keep the new cellulose in place if the wind blows.

We installed rock wool fire resistant insulation around the furnace flu piping for safe measures. Then, we blew in cellulose insulation to add more R value to the finished product.

Look at the nasty batt insulation. Notice the air gaps between each of the batts. This makes the house drafty and colder/hotter than normal.

New soffit air baffles to keep the new cellulose insulation in place during windy days. Also allows for proper ventilation of the attic.

Rock wool, fire resistant insulation was used around the furnace flue for safety measures.

Plenty of new cellulose insulation that is thicker, more tightly packed, and no air gaps to allow cold.hot air through.
