This Arlington, VA homeowner was looking to decrease energy bills and increase the comfort of their home. They were experiencing cold floors and drafts. We performed a home energy audit to determine exactly where this home was losing energy.
Solution
Comfenergy used 2 part foam spray insulation to seal the rim joists in the basement. Then, we performed a complete attic air seal and blew another 10" of TruSoft cellulose insulation over top of the old Batt insulation.
Project Summary
Evaluator: Mike Dowling
This Arlington home was looking for ways to seal the house for air leakage and lower their utility bills.
The rim joists in the basement are HUGE air leakage locations. 2 part foam spray is used to seal them.
Look at the coverage of the foam spray. There is no air getting in or out of here!
The attic originally had deep insulation, but was batt type and was haphazardly installed.
Insulation was just laying all over the place.
The recessed lights were covered with rock wool (fire resistant) covers and sealed air tight using one part foam spray.
Donald cutting the 4" thick SilverGlo foam boards to seal the storage deck in the attic.
The storage deck showed signs of air leakage, so it was also sealed using one part foam spray.
Last but not least, TruSoft cellulose insulation was blown throughout to offer a better insulation value.
The entire ducting system was buried to improve its ability to deliver cool air in the summer, and warm air in the winter.
