Metal HVAC ducts passing through an attic in the summer can heat up.  Attic temperatures can reach 120-140 degrees in the summer.  This creates a hostile environment for the cold air trying to pass through the hot metal ducts which can cause condensation, otherwise known as "sweating ducts".  Water in an attic can lead to mold growth and poor air quality.  It can also drip onto dry wall and cause damage over time.  Encapsulating metal HVAC ducts with spray foam is a great way to combat this type of issue.  It creates a safer pathway for the cold air to pass through which can reduce the cost of energy bills and take stress off of an HVAC system because it wont have to keep pumping out more conditioned air.
