Home Energy Audit Photo Album: Leesburg Virginia Attic - Radiant Barrier and Insulation
These Leesburg Virginia homeowners wanted to make their home more energy efficient. They had inefficient insulation in their attic along with uncontrolled air flow and evidence of rodents. Many of the surface areas in the attic had thin to no insulation around areas that had gaps or holes which were allowing for conditioned air to escape the rooms below and heat up the attic rather than the home and living areas. Our Certified Home Performance Sales Pro Eric was able to design a fill home project that would not only make the home more energy efficient but more comfortable year round as well. Removing the old insulation, air sealing the attic floor and sealing up other areas allowing for air flow and then installing a radiant barrier on the underside of the roof before blowing in more cellulose insulation. All of this will help hold in conditioned air below and keep the rooms comfortable with less energy used to heat and cool all year long.
Hot Attic
With thin and insufficient insulation this attic was getting too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. It was leading to temperature changes in the rooms below.
Attic Air Sealing
Zyp Foam was used to seal up the gaps and cracks where airflow was able to occur.
Old Insulation
Different areas in the attic were missing insulation and allowing for external air and temperatures to impact the home.
Air Seal and Radiant Barrier in Attic
Continuing to air seal using Zyp Foam and then covering up holes and the roof bottom with a radiant barrier. The radiant barrier will help to deflect heat from entering the attic from outside.
Radiant Barrier
Similar to what is used in some automobile windshields in the summer, this radiant barrier helps prevent heat rays from warming up the attic and home.
Radiant Barrier
This radiant barrier now covers the underside of the roof.
