Homeowner's in Boston, VA wanted to make their home more comfortable all year long. In the winter they were experiencing cold floors, drafy areas throughout the house, and a cold basement. In the summer, some bedrooms were hotter than the rest of the house and there was lots of condensation in the home.
Solution
To make these homeowners more comfortable throughout the entire year, Comfenergy first got rid of all of the old nasty insulation that was in the attic. Then, we air sealed and properly insulated the attic, installed recessed light fixture covers, insulated the rim joists, and insulated the chimney chase. This resulted in much warmer floors, less drafts, and a more comfortable home. The homeowners also saved money on their energy bills.
Project Summary
Evaluator: Shayne Sandner
Homeowners in Boston, VA had a home that was uncomfortable despite having a relatively new and good sized furnace/AC,
Old, yucky insulation that was in the attic. Over many years it collected dirt, dust, pollen, and other undesirable things.
Comfenergy removed all of the old insulation to start fresh. This allows us to do a proper air sealing job. We installed new soffit baffles where possible/needed.
We sealed all accessible penetrations and top plates with expanding polyurethane foam.
TiteShell Can Light Covers were installed over top of all can lights and sealed with ZypFoam polyurethane foam around the edge and any holes made for electrical wires.
We sealed the chimney chase with metal flashing, fire caulk, and wrapped it with a rock wool sleeve.
Closed cell spray foam was installed on the rim joists to seal and insulate.
TruSoft cellulose insulation is blown in to an R value of 60.
