This Leesburg, VA homeowner had just moved into this home from a warmer climate. They were interested in generally making this older home more energy efficient, safer, healthier, and prepared for their first COLD winter in Virginia.
Solution
Comfenergy put together a plan to make all of this happen. We started by removing old insulation in the attic, then air sealing and installing a new "super deck" storage deck, and adding R49 insulation throughout. Rim joists in the basement were sealed to prevent cold air from entering and making the basement cold. We also installed new, safer pull down stairs to the attic and a new sump pump to keep the house dry!
All of these improvements also made the HVAC equipment run less and made the house use less energy!

This Leesburg, VA homeowner had just moved in from a warmer climate. They were looking to make the house warm for the coming winter and more energy efficient.
This older home had very little attic insulation and had many spots with air leakage, losing the expensive oil heat.
Look how nasty the old attic insulation is.
The old attic storage deck with lots of gaps to lose heat.
The attic storage deck wasn't even properly screwed in place. A recipe for falling through the ceiling!
We removed the old insulation and you can see where we have sealed air leaks with the orange colored one part foam.
The empty air sealed attic ready for new insulation.
The new "SuperDeck" attic storage decking. 4" SilverGlo foam boards under 1/2" thick plywood.
Look how nice and air tight this new "SuperDeck" is.
New, safe, pull down attic stairs to access the new "SuperDeck" storage area in the attic.
The rim joists in the basement showed air leakage with the blower door test during the evaluation.
Two part, closed cell foam spray was used to seal the rim joists.
A new sump pump was installed to keep the basement safe and dry.

The final attic insulation was installed. New R49 cellulose insulation to prevent "wind washing".
