This Vienna, VA homeowner was complaining about drafts on the upper level of their home. After a full comfort and energy evaluation, Comfenergy determined the drafts were coming from the cantilevers (or overhangs) on the front and back sides of the home. We determined this by usiing a blower door, smoke pencil, and thermal imaging.
Solution
Comfenergy put together a solution for the homeowner to disassemble these cantilevers, air seal and insulate them, and put them back together.
Project Summary
Evaluator: Shayne Sandner
This Vienna, VA homeowner contacted us to help lessen the drafts in their home on the upper lever. Notice the cantilevers (overhangs) across the front of this home.
Once we opened the cantilever and removed then fiberglass batts, we saw there was nothing stopping air from traveling into the rooms/floors above.
Even the HVAC duct was "out in the open" - this would cool heated air in the winter, and heat up cooled air in the summer. Not efficient or comfortable!
Comfenergy used SilverGlo foam boards and one part foam spray to seal off the air traveling beneath the floors above.
You can now see how no air can get beneath the floors above.
The existing fiberglass batts were put back into place to add a little more R value to separate the floors from the cold air.
Another picture of the fiberglass batts back in place.
The finished product! You can't even tell we were there!!
Now the floors are warm and the drafts have been lessen tremendously.
