Mildew in Basement - Hamilton, VA
Challenge
This Hamilton, VA homeowner was bothered by mildew odors in the home. After a full comfort and energy evaluation it was determined that the humidity level in their basement/crawl space was high enough to allow mildew to grow. Comfenergy put a prescription together to rid the basement of the mildew and make sure it would not come back.
Solution
All infected areas were first sprayed with hydrogen peroxide and other mildew cleaners/inhibitors. Then, we worked to encapsulate the basement and separate it from the outside air allowing the humidity level to get high enough to facilitate mildew growth. First a "dimple mat" was installed on the dirt floor to allow the Earth to dry beneath the encapsulation. A CleanSpace 20 mil thick vapor barrier was installed on top of the dimple mat. Clean Space has 7 layers and is thick like a pool liner so it doesn't rip or puncture. Plus, it has anti-microbial agents built in to keep it from growing mildew.
