This Oakton, VA homeonwer was having trouble making their home comforotable. They were experiencing "everything" when it came to comfort issues and energy issues. Things like drafty rooms, high energy bills, dusting too much, humidity issues, and more.....
Solution
Comfenergy put together a prescription to fix all of those comfort issues throughout the house. Not only was the attic air sealed and insulated properly, but the crawl space below the house was encapsulated too.
This slows the "stack effect" in the home. It keeps heating and cooling from leaving tha home at the top of the home (attic) and sucking in air at the bottom of the home (crawl space).
Project Summary
Evaluator: Mike Estrada
This Oakton, VA homeowner had all kinds of comfort issues that were leading to unknown higher than normal utility bills. Heating and cooling was leaving their home at the top (attic) and un-heated and un-cooled air was being sucked in a t the bottom (crawl).
A 6" diameter can light like this one creates a hole that is over 28" square inches in size at the top of the home. If you had just 10 can lights, you have a 280 square inch hole in your ceiling allowing heat and AC out! Do the math in your home!!!
Rock wool can light covers seal the leaks and prevent fires from keeping insulation away from hot can lights.
Top plates leak air too. Look at how dirty this insulation is. That from air entering and leaving the home and the insulation filters the dirt out of the air!
Top plate sealed air tight...!!!
As duct work leaves your home and enters the attic this allows air to escape too! WOW! This home was "wide open" all year round.......
Duct work leakage was sealed too.
Crawl spaces allow air to enter the home at the bottom. Causing you to have to heat and cool much more than necessary.
The finished crawl space. You could eat lunch in there now!!
Closed cell spray foam is used to insulate and seal the walls.
