This Fairfax Va homeowner got tired of living with cold floors over the top of their crawl space so they called us. Our Sales Professional Jonathan Parisi went out to do a free Home Comfort Audit and discovered several reasons for the cold floors. The crawl space had vents to the outside allowing for the uncontrolled flow of outdoor air into the crawl space. The original insulation in the crawl space had fallen loose from the flooring above and was allowing cold air from the unconditioned crawl space to make direct contact with the flooring above. Additionally, the rim joists of the home were uncapped and allowed for more cold air to move uncontrolled through the space below the home. This same situation in the summer and warmer weather season would actually lead to humidity in the crawl space and warm floors inside of the home. We installed vent caps to prohibit the flow of air both in and out of the crawl space, sealed the rim joists with 2 inches of spray foam, and then installed SilverGlo insulation panels on the walls. This will all keep the air in the crawl space more controlled and will keep the temperature of the floors above from changing due to the seasonal temperatures outside.

Crawl Space Before
Here you can see the uninsulated walls of the crawl space as well as an open vent allowing outside air to flow into the unconditioned space below the home.

Crawl Space before
The cold crawl space lacked wall insulation and the insulation attached to the flooring above had come loose and was not operating efficiently.
SilverGlo Wall insulation
SilverGlo wall panels were installed to control the air temperature in the crawl space. The seams are sealed with ZypFoam spray foam.

Vent Capped
This vent when uncapped was allowing for free flow out outside air into the crawl space. With that came humidity, allergens, and bugs, all of which could filter up into the home and rooms above the crawl space.
