A homeowner living in Fort Myer, VA gave us a call do a home comfort evaluation because she kept smelling what she described as a "fishy odor". Jeanne S. thought it was her duct work that was causing the smell. Our estimator, Chad Brofermaker, went to her house and after asking her some questions, discovered that the smell was worse later in the day after the furnace was running for a while. He had her run the heat, shut it off, and was able to smell the odor, which to him was more of a burning plastic smell. He used his thermal camera and took some thermal images of the breaker panel. The top breakers, which were for the furnace, were showing very hot and were even warm to the touch. He found that the odor was coming from the areas that were showing hot. He assessed that there was an electrical problem and immediately reached out to an electrician. They came out the next day and changed out her entire service which was over 40 years old. Thankfully, Chad was able to prevent this home from possibly burning down, had it not been discovered. On top of finding the source of the smell bothering this homeowner, Comfenergy also addressed the issue of her top floor always being too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. Jeanne's attic insulation was also 40 years old and there wasn't much of it. We removed the old insulation, air sealed, and blew in new TruSoft cellulose. Comfenergy was thrilled to make this home safe and comfortable for Jeanne.
