An uninsulated cantilever can lead to cold floors in a home. In a home with a cantilever, the rooms inside can react to outdoor temperatures when air is able to freely pass in and out of the cantilever, resulting in cold during the winter and heat during the summer. This type of comfort issue can result in higher than needed electric bills if the homeowner is relying on their HVAC unit to solve the problem but turning the heat up or the AC down. Dense packing the cantilever happens by cutting access holes and packing them with insulation.
A kneewall space is created when a finished room is built within a sloped roof. A short wall called a "kneewall" forms a triangular space which in this case, is accessible with a short door. Cold and hot air from outdoors enters the kneewall space through leaky fascia/soffit assemblies or through soffit vents. Kneewalls that are not properly insulated can contribute to your top floor being very uncomfortable. Here, a kneewall is air sealed and insulated with closed cell spray foam. SilverGlo insulation foam board is also installed on all vertical walls between levels.

This Alexandria VA home had comfort issues due to a lack of efficient air seal in the attic and inefficient insulation. In addition to that, the HVAC ducts were sweating causing water to accumulate and damage the ceiling/drywall above several rooms. When an HVAC system is pushing cold air through a metal duct that passes through a hot attic space, it will create condensation (sweat) which can accumulate and cause damage or even promote the growth of mold. We used spray foam to insulate sections of the duct work. This will help keep the ducts from heating up and let the cold air pass through without issue,

This homeowner in Fairfax, VA wanted the best insulation possible for their newly framed basement renovation. They were looking for no drafts, great...
Our patented product, Tight 'N True duct encapsulation system, provides airtight insulation coverage. It provides extra sealing to the existing duct wrap, delivering airtight protection and heat resistance. It enhances the effects of your insulation, optimizes your energy usage, and lowers utility bills.
Some benefits of duct encapsulation include:
- Superior R-value per inch
- Recovers insulation value from existing duct insulation
- Highly efficient with performance enhancing add-ons
To maximize the insulation performance, the Tight 'N True system can be combined with our TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation. The cellulose insulation heavily guards and covers the ducts, resulting in even more energy-saving and home performance capabilities.
Radiant Barrier for Comfort and Storage
A radiant barrier should always be a part of a home's insulation system. It functions to reduce temperatures in the attic by reflecting heat away. Radiant barriers are installed around the joists, roof beams, and wall studs - when combined with other insulation services, your attic can become a conditioned space.
Besides comfort, installing a radiant barrier can allow you to use your attic for storage, because the heat will no longer damage your belongings. Radiant barriers can lower attic temperatures by up to 30 degrees. An insulated attic will also keep humidity lower, preventing moisture or mold damage to your things as well.
Happy homeowner after service.
This client was so happy with the results of her home's service that she reached out to give feedback on the work and team that visited her home. We thrive on client feedback and do our best to exceed expectations for every project.
I just wanted to let you know that the work that was done in my house made a WORLD of difference!!! My upstairs bedroom is perfectly comfortable now – the heat comes blasting out of the vent. The main floor is also more comfortable in the front room (over the storage room that had the exposed floor). Overall, the temperature is very even throughout the home. I think that duct cleaning and sealing may have been the key to making this change. While the insulation needed to be done (for sure), the vents upstairs now blow air much more strongly. Also, adding the return register and sound-lining the return ducts cut down on the noise. I don’t even notice the heat when it’s on. I am waiting to see how things sound with the AC – that was always a lot noisier.
Just wanted you to know!
Thanks for everything,
--Nicole
Herndon VA Sound and Noise Solutions with Wall Dense Packing
This Herndon VA homeowner was experiencing home comfort issues due to having different rooms in their home have different temperatures year round. they call Comfenergy to ask for a home performance inspection. Our sales professional Jason went out to visit and performed a free whole home assessment. He was able to find the issue causing the comfort issues but while speaking to the homeowners they also mentioned that their home was very noisy and that they were interested in finding a way to reduce the sound that travelled through the home in hopes to have a much quieter nursery room. Jason was able to offer our wall dense packing solution using Rock Wool insulation. This would not only help to reduce the sound in and around the home but it would also serve to better insulate each room that was treated. Dense packing involves cutting strategic locations in the drywall and then filling the space inside of the wall from top to bottom with Rock Wool insulation. This is a fire safe material that greatly reduces the ability for noise and sound to travel through the walls of the home. This home will now be quieter, more energy efficient and most of all, more comfortable.
Springfield VA Attic Insulation and Vent Pipe Resetting
This Springfield VA home had comfort issues that were bothering the homeowners. The top floor of the home was too hot i the summer and the air inside the home felt humid. The homeowners called Comfenergy asking for help and had our Home Performance Sales Expert Eric come out to do a no cost inspection. Eric checked the home from top to bottom and found out what was leading to the problems. Eric identified an insufficient amount of insulation in the attic and a lack of an air seal for the space. This meant that conditioned air from the HVAC system was not able to stay in the rooms it was being pumped into because it was able to escape via light fixtures, air vents and cracks or gaps in the structure of the home and drywall. Additionally Eric noticed that several bathroom exhaust ducts had become disconnected and were venting air directly into the attic, rather than out of the home. An HVAC duct was also found to have a loose joint where the set up turned and was leaking conditioned air. This all made the HVAC less effective and added humidity to the uncontrolled attic air. Our Production Team started the project by removing all of the old insulation in the attic, then used Zyp Foam to seal up the cracks, light fixtures and vent edges making a better air seal for the space. They reset the loose ducts and replaced several of them with insulated new material that would better serve to deliver vented air where it needed to go.
