This Bealton, VA homeowner called Comfenergy complaining of a cold room on the first floor of their home. Comfenergy performed an evaluation to find...
John R. and his wife Sarah live in Goldvein, VA. They wanted to make their home more energy efficient, make their master bedroom more comfortable, and reduce the draft from their fireplace. We removed and disposed of all of their existing insulation first. Then we air sealed and insulated the attic by closing all accessible penetrations and top plates and blowing in TruSoft cellulose insulation to an R value of 60. We installed TiteShell recessed light fixture covers over top of the can lights and sealed with polyurethane foam around the edges and any holes made for electrical wires. The metal chimney was wrapped with rockwool and the existing scuttle was upgraded. To make the master bedroom more comfortable the Comfenergy team insulated and air sealed the ceiling over the garage with dense-pack TruSoft cellulose and installed closed cell spray foam insulation to the attic adjacent walls in the knee wall space. Finally, to make the fireplace less drafty we air sealed and insulated around the fireplace bump-out.
Lower Energy Bills in Remington, VA
John G. wanted to make his home in Remington, VA more energy efficient and lower his energy bills. His problem was that he had air leaks at the top of his home and a poorly insulated attic. To reduce overall air leakage, the attic is the first priority because warm air rises to the top of the house and finds any and all holes to leak out of. Attics are dramatically under-insulated compared to today's standards.
Adding insulation in an attic without sealing all of the air leaks should never be done. This is because you are burying air leaks and making them impossible to seal later and insulation does not stop air leaks. To make John's home more energy efficient, Comfenergy first carefully air sealed the the various points where air from his home leaked up in the attic and out of the house with polyurethane expanding foam. Then, we installed baffles in each rafter bay to keep soffit vents clear and prepare for insulation.
For the last step, our production team blew in our premium TruSoft cellulose insulation to an optimum R value of 60. TruSoft will not burn, get moldy, or attract pests. Blown insulation fills all gaps and odd shaped voids. Now John has a warmer, less drafty house and his fuel and electric bills are lower.
Super Knee Wall in a Cape Cod
The second floor of a cape cod style home in Summerduck, VA was frequently quite uncomfortable. This was due to hardly any insulation in the attic, lots of air leakage and un-insulated knee walls. This homeowner also wanted to use the knee wall space for storage, but in it's current state, it was too hot, cold, and dusty to do so. Comfenergy had the answer to fix these issues. First, we installed SilverGlo insulation panels on the bottom of the rafters in the kneewall spaces and the ceiling joist bays are sealed with foam to stop air leakage. Then, the roof slopes and the flat ceiling are insulated with TruSoft cellulose insulation. This results in the elimination of drafts, a more comfortable home, and knee wall spaces that are clean and suitable for storage.
