Part of providing excellent customer service is keeping our teams up to date on how things work / or don't work. Duct leakage is a major compoent of...
A homeowner in Philomont, VA called to ask us if a $600 per month electric bill was "normal".
Comfenergy suggested that, it depends upon the size of the home, and more importantly it depends upon how tight or leaky the home is. Once heating and cooling is made from the HVAC system, and you get it to the rooms you want it in with duct work....Then you want to make sure it stays there. The "building envelope" holds the heating and cooling in the home.
Comfenergy ended up performing a full evaluation on this home to find many air leaks in the building envelope, and the HVAC ducting system too. A comprehensive, detailed estimate was provided for the homeowner to seal these leaks, and lower their utility bills. Most likely this homeowner will be able to lower their electric bills in half once the repairs are completed.
High Energy Bills in Bumpass, VA
A homeowner in Bumpass, VA was frustrated with how much it was costing her family to heat and cool their home. No matter how often the heat kicked on in the winter, she was still uncomfortable. Concerned about the energy efficiency of her home, she gave us a call at Comfenergy to schedule a free home comfort evaluation. One of our sales representatives traveled to the home to investigate. He entered the attic and immediately found that it had been insulated with fiberglass batts, which were now in rough shape. The attic was not air-sealed properly, allowing air to pass through any gaps and cracks. Some of the existing insulation was damaged by pests. Mice love to burrow in the soft material. And finally, the air ducts that ran through the attic were under-insulated and leaking the air that this homeowner paid to heat and cool into the unconditioned attic.
Eager to get these issues resolved, this homeowner signed a contract and scheduled installation date. The Comfenergy Production Crew started by removing the old and dirty fiberglass in the attic. Next, they used expanding foam to seal the top plates and any crevices and cracks that could allow air to escape. To finish up air sealing, they used closed cell spray foam to encapsulate the air ducts. TruSoft Cellulose insulation was blown into the attic, achieving an R-Value of R40 for the final step. TruSoft Cellulose is pretreated with borate, a chemical compound that makes the material fireproof and pest resistant.
This homeowner is so excited to finally have a well-insulated home and she already noticed a difference in her energy bills!
Zyp Foam to the rescue
It may not look like much, but this orangish pink goo could be the key to making your home more comfortable. From crawl space encapsulation with wall insulation panels to an attic space like the one pictured here, an air seal can be the building block that helps make any project a success. Zyp Foam is what we used to seal up cracks, gaps holes, and any other type of small space that can allow air to move in or out of a room or area in your home. Keeping conditioned air that you paid money to heat or cool inside of your home and keeping unconditioned air out of your attic or basement will make your home more comfortable and healthier. After air sealing an attic space with Zyp Foam, we will often cover the area with Tru Soft blew cellulose insulation to further create the desired type of control.
Middleburg VA home had humidity issues.
This Middleburg VA home was too humid year-round. The homeowner called us to come to perform an inspection to try and find a solution. Jonathan Parisi came out to evaluate the home and found a combination of solutions to help improve the comfort inside. It was determined that the insulation in the attic was not working as effectively as it could and that the conditioned air from the HVAC system was escaping through numerous cracks and holes in the roof of the top floor rooms. This meant that air that costs money to turn hot or cold was leaving the attic, thus causing a need for the HVAC system to create more conditioned air to replace it. Air in a home tends to travel from the lower levels to the top floors. Jonathan was also able to identify that there was an excessive amount of moisture in the lower level of the home. This meant that moisture-rich air from the lower level was moving to the top floors of the home, leading to humidity throughout the house and causing discomfort to the homeowner.
Starting with a SaniDry Sedona dehumidifier being installed to reduce humidity in the home, our production team then removed the existing insulation from the attic, exposing the many holes and cracks that needed to be air sealed to prevent the free flow of air from inside of the home, into the attic. Once the air seal was completed, the attic was filled with TruSoft blew cellulose insulation.
In the end, the humidity was reduced and better controlled and the attic was made into a more controlled space. The conditioned air from the HVAC system was no longer allowed to escape and the homeowner was able to reduce their energy bill.
Ashburn VA home benefits from spray foam
This Ashburn VA homeowner was experiencing comfort issues in the living space of the home. Their HVAC system was working harder than they thought it should be causing their utility bills to be higher than they would like. There were rooms in the home with various temperatures one another and depending on the time of year the homeowner was either too hot or too cold. Our sales professional Pedro did a full home energy audit and identified several options for solving these problems. Pedro took detailed notes and set out a plan of action for our production team to execute. Removing the external cover of a cantilever on the side of the house and administering spray foam to both insulate and seal the space inside would help to keep external air and temperatures from impacting the room it was connected to. In the attic of the home, we removed some existing Tyvek panels and old batt insulation that was not working the way it was intended and replaced it with more spray foam. Other areas of the attic were air sealed to keep the conditioned air made by the HVAC system from being able to escape into the attic and out of the home. Once the spray foam and air seal were complete the attic was turned into a conditioned space with would no longer allow the living space of the home to have such fluctuations in temperature from room to room. The result is a more comfortable home with reduced energy costs.
Why is it so hot in here?
Have you ever wondered why one room in your home is so much hotter than the others? Maybe you have several rooms that all have varying degrees of comfort? Through the magic of technology we can explain why that is. Our sales pros use numerous tools to try and narrow down the cause of the issues that home owners call us to try and solve. One of the best tools is a Thermal Imaging Camera. As shown here, it can visually the temperature differences in a room and show exactly where the heat or cold is coming from. Once we know that, we can identify how to fix it. This Aldie VA home had rooms that were too hot. Through use of the Thermal Imaging Camera we found that conditioned air, made cool via the fully functioning HVAC system, was being allowed to escape via can lights, ventilation fans, an attic door and window seams in the room. This also meant that cold air heted air in the colder months would do the same. This could cause an HVAC system to work and run more than it should and run up the energy costs for the homeowner. See the original photo of the room and then see the individual Termal Images of each place where the air was able to leave. The AC vent was pumping cold air into the room as it should.
