Insulating Cantilevers and Attic
Challenge
This home was experiencing uncomfortably hot top floors in the summer and noticeably humid conditions. Upon our inspection, we found that the attic had signs of mold growth and the loose insulation was damp, rendering it useless. Additionally, the home had a cantilever that needed to be reinsulated too. The rooms in the front of the house near the cantilever were consistently too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.
Solution
First, our team started by removing the old loose insulation from the attic. We reinsulated the attic with TruSoft cellulose and air sealed the floor with ZypFoam. These solutions will keep the relative humidity of the attic low enough to prevent mold growth. It also turns the attic into a conditioned space which will keep the whole home healthy and comfortable.
The cantilevers in the front and back of the home needed to be insulated too. Our team carefully removed some of the wood decking and remaining insulation. Next we used spray foam insulation to fix the comfort issues associated with the cantilevers. The floors and rooms above them will not be too hot or too cold anymore!
