Culpepper garage and storage space gets spray foam and air seal.
Challenge
This Culpepper VA home has a garage and storage space that shares its ceiling with the kitchen floor above. Cold air in the unconditioned garage space would lead to cold floors in the kitchen area above. Other spaces in the home that shared walls with the garage area were also feeling the effects of cold air being able to pass through the walls and rim joists creating discomfort for the homeowners. The existing insulation was not doing its intended job as it had fallen loose in some areas and it had torn in others. Even in spaces where the insulation was flush, it was still allowing cold air to move freely through the small cracks between the floor. walls and ceiling.
Solution
Our sales professional Jonathan Parisi paid a visit to the home to find possible solutions to help improve the comfort in the home He identified a need for better quality insulation and an air seal to keep conditioned air in and cold air from coming in. The homeowner decided to take on the task of removing the old insulation and then our production team showed up to finish the project. 3 inches of spray foam was used to seal the rim joists at the top of the garage/storage area walls which was previously an access point for the cold air to move from one area to another. The ceiling of the space that was accessible to cold outside air and causing the kitchen floors above to be cold was also covered in spray foam. Afterward, the home was significantly less likely to let outside cold air infiltrate the space which helped to improve the overall comfort in the home. Air seal and insulation is one of the best methods available to help improve the comfort in a home and it can reduce the energy cost to heat or cool a home.
