This Washington, D.C. homeowner had many issues to solve. Their back porch/sun room was cold in the winter and the water lines running beneath it would freeze. Plus, they had a vaulted ceiling in a top floor room that was very hot in the summer. That vaulted ceiling also had several recessed can lights that leaked air badly.
Solution
Comfenergy used 2" SilverGlo foam boards to build a "box" around the water lines. We then used closed cell foam spray to air seal and insulate the entire area under the porch and around the water line "box". Then the vaulted ceiling was densely packed with cellulose insulation to keep the top floor room cool in the summer. Finally, the recessed can lights were air sealed using a high temperature caulk and we changed the bulbs to low temperature LED lights. Problems solved!!

This beautiful Washington DC home was hiding many comfort issues within...
We used cellulose insulation to "dense pack" the vaulted ceiling from the outside. Don't try this at home!
Our crew member Manuel sealing the recessed can lights in the top floor room to keep the heated/cooled air from escaping.
The finished air sealed can light. LED bulbs will be installed so they run at a cooler temperature and save $$ for the homeowner too.
These water lines under the back porch froze every winter. We had a solution for them!
SilverGlo foam boards were used to build a box around the water lines. This keeps the cold air away from them and allows them to absorb the heat from the room above. Then we encased them in closed cell foam spray.
Another section beneath the back porch/sun room. No wonder it is so cold in that room!
The final product of the closed cell foam spray under the back porch/sun room. We trimmed the excess away so the homeowner could install plywood for a more appealing look.
