This Fairfax, VA homeowner was having trouble getting the top floor of their home to be warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. They "expected" the top floor to be warmer, but it was a surprise to them how cold it was during the winter.
Solution
The following pictures and descriptions defines a portion of the work Comfenergy did to make things more comfortable on the top floor of this home......
Project Summary
Evaluator: Carl Depner
This Fairfax, VA home had issues with the upper level. The top floor was very cold in the winter during the recent cold snap.
One of the cantilevers on the back side of the home had no "rim joist" and allowed cold air to travel into this area and beneath the floor above this. Making the floors cold on the upper level. (Attic insulation is not always the total solution)
Comfenergy removed the fiberglass insulation and installed a 4" thick SilverGlo foam board "rim joist" to stop air travel beneath the floors above.
Closed cell spray foam was used to air seal and insulate the empty cavity of the cantilever.
New basement window inserts were installed to slow down the air coming into the home at the bottom......which also slows the air from leaving at the top too.
The existing attic insulation was removed, all possible air leakage spots were sealed with one part foam, and new soffit baffles were installed in preparation for new TruSoft cellulose insulation to be installed.
The skylights were encased in 2" of closed cell spray foam insulation to lessen air leakage and radiant heat loss/gain.
This garage attic gable wall was adjacent to 2 of the top floor bedrooms. Thermal imaging showed these walls to be cold.
New closed cell spray foam insulation was installed on the garage attic gable wall. Now these 2 top floor bedrooms are nice and cozy!!
