This Falls Church, VA homeowner was dealing with an overall "cold and drafty" feel throughout the entire home in the winter. Mike Estrada evaluated the home to find an enormous amount of air leakage below the home in the crawl space.
Solution
Comfenergy had to come up with a solution that would not involve srpay foam. The homeowner had pet rabbits and did not want to subject them to any possibility of chemical inhalation. We used a crawl encapsulation method that involved dimple matting, Terra Block floor insulation, and Clean Space 20 mil vapor barrier. The last ingredient was 2" thick SilverGlo foam boards infused with graphite to increase the R value! This allowed us to seal and insulate the crawl without using any chemicals!
Project Summary
Evaluator: Mike Estrada
This Falls Church, VA homeowner was cold and uncomfortable during the winter. They couldn't figure where the drafts were coming from and were about to spend a lot of money on new windows!!!
Look at this crawl space. Upon a full evaluation, Comfenergy found the drafts to be coming from beneath the home!! Surprise! No need for those expensive windows!
This is a shot of the fiberglass insulation removed. The rim joists were VERY leaky and needed help.
The brown matting you see on the floor is called dimple matting, and it allows the ground beneath the vapor barrier to dry.
This picture shows the SilverGlo foam boards on the walls and rim joists. The homeowner did not want to have any chemicals used due to having pet rabbits!
Notice how we not only insulated and sealed the walls, but sealed the rim joists too... no more drafts here!
The finished product. The white material on the floor is a 7 layer, anti-microbial, 20 mil vapor barrier we call "CleanSpace".
Another shot of the finished product. Go look at the before picture and tell us what you think!
