Homes have many different designs. Often, town homes are designed in a creative way to allow for maximum use of all possible space. Knee walls in a top floor can be used for closets, storage areas or cut outs to give just a few more square feet of space. Properly insulating a knee wall can be the difference between enjoying that extra space or not wanting to be in the area because it is uncomfortable. Here we used Foamax insulation panels to provide insulation but keep as much useful space as possible for the homeowner.
This Alexandria VA apartment had HVAC ducts that ran adjacent to the windows and sliding doors that lead to the outside patio/deck area of the living space. This left the HVAC ducts susceptible to impact from the external temperatures which caused the HVAC to run more often than it should have needed too. This also lead to added noise for the residents when the HVAC system was running. Our Home Performance Sales Pro Pedro visited the home and found a solution to help protect the HVAC ducts from external temperatures and to reduce the noise coming from the HVAC system. Pedro advised that the HVAC ducts be encapsulated in spray foam insulation. Our production team removed the drywall around the HVAC ducts to gain access to each side and then applied spray foam to cover the ducts. Once dried, the spray foam was shaved down to make it flat around the HVAC ducts and allow to reinstall the drywall that had been cut away.
A kneewall space is created when a finished room is built within a sloped roof. A short wall called a "kneewall" forms a triangular space which in this case, is accessible with a short door. Cold and hot air from outdoors enters the kneewall space through leaky fascia/soffit assemblies or through soffit vents. Kneewalls that are not properly insulated can contribute to your top floor being very uncomfortable. Here, a kneewall is air sealed and insulated with closed cell spray foam. SilverGlo insulation foam board is also installed on all vertical walls between levels.
This Alexandria VA home had comfort issues due to a lack of efficient air seal in the attic and inefficient insulation. In addition to that, the HVAC ducts were sweating causing water to accumulate and damage the ceiling/drywall above several rooms. When an HVAC system is pushing cold air through a metal duct that passes through a hot attic space, it will create condensation (sweat) which can accumulate and cause damage or even promote the growth of mold. We used spray foam to insulate sections of the duct work. This will help keep the ducts from heating up and let the cold air pass through without issue,
A cantilever hangs out past the foundation walls of a home and can allow for external air and temperatures to impact the inside of the home if not properly insulated and sealed. Cold air from outside can make the floors connected to the cantilever cold and allergens or dust from outside can work its way into the air inside of the home. Spray foam insulation is a great way to not only insulate the floors connected to the cantilever, but to air seal the space to allow for better air control in the home.
