Sometimes less is more. This Springfield VA attic had areas with too little, and too much insulation. Collectively it was not working to properly insulate the attic and home. Our production team removed the existing insulation which was piled on and around this part of the frame and used spray foam to properly seal and insulate afterwards. this created a better air seal and a much cleaner look for the attic space.
How do you help reduce high energy bills and make a home with cathedral ceilings more comfortable year round? You insulate the knee walls of the home with silver Glo panels and air seal the space with Zyp Foam. The old school insulation that was in this area was not working. The heat and cold from outside was penetrating at different times of year, leading to draftiness and high energy bills.
This home had an attic that needed several upgrades. In addition to removal of the old insulation along with air sealing and new cellulose insulation, our Production Team built a new catwalk and deck area which would allow access to the different ends of the attic space. The walls of the decking will hold back the cellulose insulation after it is blown in.
This Lorton, VA homeowner was looking for ways to lower their utility bills. Comfenergy found a ton of air leakage in the attic allowing the heated and cooled air to leave the home. This before and after pic set is showing how we air sealed around an air duct that went into the top floor. By closing this gap, we prevent any air travelling between this space.
This set of before and after photos shows the difference between light, fluffy fiberglass insulation and new TruSoft cellulose insulation in an attic. Here are the differences you may not know:
1. Fiberglass is more susceptible to something called "wind washing". In a vented attic assembly wind can blow around in the attic and it can easily pass through the fiberglass. TruSoft cellulose packs tighter and it's harder for wind to travel through it.
2. Rodents and insects LOVE fiberglass. They nest in it and make it home.....right above your head. TruSoft cellulose is chemically washed with a liquid borate which deters rodents and insects by irritating their respiratory system.
3. TruSoft cellulose has a higher R value per inch than fiberglass.
4. TruSoft cellulose is also less succeptible to flame spread than fiberglass as well.....
